Overview

The Great House Antigua is set in one of the island’s last stone plantation houses, in the vast 26-acre estate of Mercers Creek. With only eight suites in the whole estate, this tranquil, adult-only boutique resort is a true island hideaway.

Located amidst swaying palm and mahogany trees, the resort occupies an elevated position on the east of the island, where it catches a cooling sea breeze. The closest off-site beach, Long Bay beach, is approximately five miles away. The historical sugar plantation called Betty’s Hope is just over one mile south, and the island’s capital, St. Johns, is ten miles in the opposite direction. V. C. Bird International Airport is also around ten miles away.

The property retains many of its original features – some of which date back to 1670 – combined with respectfully restored interiors. (You’ll receive a short history booklet of the property when you arrive.) A handful of suites are located in the main house and decorated in traditional style, a few with original four-poster beds from around 1840. Meanwhile, the brightly painted Garden Suite cottages sit within the resort’s tropical garden. They feature modern, white interiors; and they come with a private terrace and views over the creek.

The estate’s namesake creek and the original sugar mill are two of the property’s most interesting features. Join a guided hike with the staff to fully absorb the scenery and rich history, or enjoy additional activities including yoga, Pilates and HIIT fitness classes - check the hotel's schedule. You can also play croquet or head to the games for ping pong and board games.

When you’re ready to relax, unwind by the kidney-shaped pool, perhaps with a book from the library. Alternatively, treat yourself with a massage or kick back in a hammock, gently rocked by the sea breeze. The beach is a short stroll through the grounds, and you can hop in a kayak or peddalo boat to glide along the coastline.

Dining information

The Great House Antigua kitchens provide both local and international cuisine. Breakfast is served in the garden terrace or main dining room, and features local fruits, breads and Great House jam and honey, as well as items cooked to order. Look out for the chef who stops by breakfast to announce the catch of the day. Lunch is also served outdoors, with an a la carte menu and weekly barbecues. For dinner, a three-course menu is served in the main house. Refreshments are also offered during the daytime.

The full board package includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. Drinks include soft drinks and water (alcohol incurs extra charges). Hikes, fitness classes and use of non-motorised water sports are also included.
