What to do in Hawaii?

The range of things to do and see in Hawaii is staggering, each island has its own choice of activities and experiences. So whether you want a fly and flop beach holiday or an action-packed adventure in the jungle, Hawaii will have something for you.

Hawaii’s beaches are, of course, one of its biggest draws, with endless white sand and turquoise ocean glistening in the sun. But incredible shopping, great food, the unique and inimitable Hawaiian culture, and the islands’ diverse eco-systems and varied landscapes are worth shouting about. Depending on which island you visit, you can trek though jungle, go kayaking down the river, surf the famous North Shore breaks or explore lush farmland on Hawaii Island. A trip to these stunning islands is much more than your average beach holiday.

Shopping.

Shopping

Hawaii has some of the best shopping in the Pacific, with everything from farmer’s markets to fashionable boutiques. If you love shopping, then you’ll want to go to the world’s largest outdoor mall. The Ala Moana Center in Waikiki has more than 280 stores including Macy’s and Armani. Or stroll along the glass canopied Waikiki Beach Walk for local shops amid luxury settings.

Beaches

You’ll find some of the best beaches in the world in Hawaii, including the famous and glitzy Waikiki Beach in Honolulu. Oahu also has some incredible surfing beaches along its iconic North Shore. Head to Lahaina’s beaches on Maui for incredible snorkelling – and don’t miss the nightly cliff diving from Black Rock. Hawaii Island’s Punalu'u Beach is volcanic black sand, and is where you’ll see endangered hawksbill turtles basking in the sun.

Food.

Food

Hawaiian culture is so diverse you will be surprised at the array of international dishes available to you. Make sure to go to a traditional luau, a celebration of old Hawaii and its flavours, embrace the music and dancing to enjoy to the full. Honolulu offers some gourmet restaurants, like Alan Wong’s – frequented by President Obama when in Hawaii. But you’ll also find fantastic sashimi and sushi on the islands, as there is a large Japanese population.

Sightseeing.

Sightseeing

Popular attractions in Hawaii range from national parks and spectacular scenery to cultural highlights and historic tributes. The USS Arizona and Pearl Harbour monuments offer glimpses into Hawaii’s near past. But for a more traditional time, venture to Honaunau National Historic Park, especially the temples with beautiful Tiki carvings. Or visit Waimea Canyon in Kauai, considered to be the Grand Canyon of Hawaii, for truly amazing landscapes.

Those looking for an adventure holiday will be hard pushed to find a better place than Hawaii. Cycling through lush forest, hiking up volcanos, climbing vast rock faces, snorkelling with manta rays in tropical waters and so on. It is all available. Don’t miss the active volcanos tour on Hawaii Island, or try horse riding on Waimea’s plains. Those in the know, take their adventure to Wailuku River State Park on Oahu, where you can see the otherworldly Rainbow Falls.

Surfing.

Surfing

More than a national pastime, surfing in Hawaii has an almost mythical status among locals. It is easy to see why as the breaks across the islands are legendary. Oahu’s famous North Shore holds the biggest event in surfing, the Vans Triple Crown each year in November and December, when the swells are huge. Waikiki Beach is also famous for surfing, and is where the ‘father of modern surfing’ and legendary Olympian, Duke Kahanamoku, has a statue to his legacy.
