How to spend your time in Sicily

It’s the place to go for a glamorous beach resort, but holidays in Sicily can be so much more than just lying on the sand. If you care to explore the island there’s a hidden hoard of things to do.

There’s so much to see – not only the natural beauty, but the layers of beautiful buildings and stories built over the top of it. To top it all, the island is crowned by active volcanoes. Though distances are short and the island can be navigated by car, part of the lure of Sicily is the unexplored, the unknown, the unfamiliar territory, and the thrill of being slightly lost in the middle of it all.

Shopping.

Spectacular sights

Baroque towns gracing rolling hillsides, Norman cathedrals on the beachfronts, Greek temples at sunset. Sicily’s profusion of architectural sights spans millennia. Visit Syracuse and divide time between the archaeological site of the Greek Theatre, which once accommodated 15,000 spectators, and an afternoon wandering the streets of the island of Ortygia, with its mythological fountain of Arethusa.

Dining.

Rustic or refined dining

And I said, what about breakfast in Sicily? One of the only places where it’s acceptable to start your day with ice cream in a brioche bun, Sicily’s food is a delight. Try arancini, seafood or cannoli with cream foaming out of the ends. Find pistachios in unusual places- in fragrant risotto or pizzas. Gastronomic restaurants make Sicilian ingredients reach their potential.

Natural beauty.

Breathtaking natural beauty

Sicily has some of the best beaches in the Mediterranean- long, white, sandy and framed by spectacular scenery: visit Isola Bella near Taromina. The view from Mount Etna is otherworldly and dramatic, especially at sunset, and the craggy coastline of Panarea in the Aeolian island chain is worth an explorative boat trip.

Nightlife.

Sicilian nights out

A night should be dedicated to sampling Sicily’s great wine. A good native Marsala wine is best enjoyed after a meal, an Etna Rosso best enjoyed at a vineyard. Catania is lively and fun; try the Rendez Vous Wine Bar, frequented by locals. In Taormina, after an evening stroll along the main street, Corso Umberto I, try a classy cocktail at Mocambo Bar.
