Tips for long haul flights to New York
Health-and-wellbeing

Tips for long haul flights to New York

Travelling can be tiring, so you can’t beat a good night’s sleep before your flight. Stay fully hydrated and avoid stimulants like caffeine and chocolate. Alcohol can also affect your sleep so limit consumption on and before a flight. Beat jetlag by living on your new time zone as soon as you land. Don’t cramp your space with too much carry-on luggage around your feet. Moisturise and use lip balm, take extra layers and wear loose, comfortable clothing. Take care of your health by reading our guide and watch the in-flight wellbeing video. An extra touch? Invest in noise cancelling headphones to reduce aircraft noise as it powers you at 500 mph across the Atlantic.

Club-World

Best place to sit on a long haul flight to New York

For total comfort Club World and First give you the option of lying fully flat to sleep. World Traveller Plus gives you larger legroom and seats in a smaller cabin. In World Traveller the quieter seats are at the front of the plane. Get an aisle seat or exit row for more freedom, though we actually receive more bookings for window seats. Seating over the wing has less turbulence and young families might prefer seats in the bulkhead, which have more room. You can select your seats well in advance for an extra fee. Free seat selection opens with check-in 24 hours in advance.

Customs and tipping

UK passport holders are entitled to enter New York under the Visa Waiver Programme, however must have gained authorisation under ESTA. Passengers will be given a landing card during the flight, to make your arrival as smooth as possible.

Once in New York, tipping is prevalent. Bar servers, bellhops, and concierges will expect a small gratuity for their services. But you don't have to tip wildly, $1 or $2 is often enough. In a restaurant or for room service, consider tipping 15 to 20 per cent of the bill instead.

Getting to and around New York City
New York taxis.

Getting to and around New York City

Getting around the Big Apple couldn’t be easier. Hail a taxi from the airport – a typical taxi fare from JFK to central Manhattan is around $55 including tolls and tip. Alternatively, you could book a transfer before you arrive to make it even easier. Why not arrive in style by booking a limousine from the airport? Or save some money by sharing a shuttle transfer. Getting around New York City is simple, as there is a grid system of numbered streets and named avenues. You can choose from buses, taxis, trains and the famous subway.
