Looking to get a last-minute break in before the Christmas rush or perhaps you fancy a spot of early winter sun? We’ve gathered together our top picks for where to go in November, from Peru to Poland, Costa Rica to South Africa.

The beach…

With more than 1,000 miles of unspoiled sandy coastline but few tourists, Oman is one of the best-kept secrets for a November beach retreat. In its capital, Qurum Beach has the best selection of restaurants nearby. For a more artisanal experience, drive through the mountains to the rugged Qantab Beach, where local fishermen are happy to take small groups out for boat rides. Oman’s National Day is 18 November, the birthday of the country’s ruling sultan. The celebrations include traditional dancing, fireworks and camel racing.

Set over 124 acres overlooking the Gulf of Oman, the Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort and Spa is home to three hotels, each with its own unique character and charm. Al Waha (‘the oasis’) is ideal for groups or families, with shaded swimming pools, a dive centre and relaxed dining options, while Al Bandar (‘the town’) is the resort’s central point, with architecture inspired by traditional buildings. But if you’re really looking to indulge, plump for the palatial Al Husn (‘the castle’), where infinity pools and luxury spa treatments are the order of the day.

    Money matters

Oman’s currency is the Omani Rial (OMR), made up of 1,000 baisa and tipping is not customary.

    Did you know…

Costa Rica is home to more than 500,000 species of wildlife – including 300,000 different insects – making it one of the world’s most biodiverse countries.

    Breath of fire

Legend has it that Krakow is protected by a dragon whose lair is supposedly underneath the city’s castle.

The city...

Join the locals for Poland’s Independence Day on 11 November, or visit on 29 November for St Andrew’s Eve, where young single girls – and, increasingly, young single men – carry out customs to see what their futures hold. You’ll also be in time to explore winter markets ahead of the Christmas rush. The market in Rynek Glowny (the old town’s main square) is by far the best – be sure to stock up on traditional woollen clothes and hand-carved wooden ornaments.

Head to the Bohemian Kazimierz Quarter and enjoy the comfortable surroundings of the Galaxy Hotel, ideally located for sightseeing.

The family trip...

South Africa

A journey down the Eastern Cape’s Cango Route is ideal for budding Attenboroughs. At wildlife reserves along the way are buffalo, elephants, hippos, giraffes and more than 200 bird species, including ostriches (the route starts in the legendary ostrich town of Oudtshoorn). Make time too for the astonishing Cango Caves. Families with older children should make a visit to chef Eric Bulpitt’s new restaurant (opening 1 November) on the 300-year-old Avondale Estate in the Paarl valley.

If you stop in Cape Town, check into Table Bay Hotel on the V&A Waterfront, a prime location with great beaches, golf courses and shopping nearby.

The big trip...

Costa Rica

It’ll be the rainy season, but mid-November is the best time to visit this tropical paradise before crowds descend. Showers tend to be light and confined to afternoons, but you’ll benefit from a refreshed, verdant landscape – which is, after all, the reason that most people visit. From mangrove swamps to surf swells, via volcanic peaks and whitewater rivers, the country has breathtaking scenery to spare.

    Coffee break

In Oman, it’s traditional to serve coffee in small cups throughout the day to drink it in ‘1000 sips’ and is usually served with dry dates.

The wild card…

October marks the end of peak season and December brings the rains, making November the ideal time to explore Peru. Take the luxurious Belmond Hiram Bingham train from Poroy, near the ancient capital, Cusco, to Aguas Calientes, from where you can explore the wonders of Machu Picchu. If you’re looking for something a little less traditional, Peru is a surf hot spot that’s increasingly calling to an international crowd. Head to northern areas of Cabo Blanco and Máncora for the best waves at this time of year, when waters are a balmy 19°C.

Situated in the hub of top-class restaurants and historical sites in the upmarket Miraflores district, the JW Marriott Hotel Lima covers all bases.
