Gibraltar

Gibraltar

It may overlook North Africa, but Gibraltar sometimes feels more British than Britain itself. An overseas territory of the United Kingdom since 1713, this rock jutting out from the Andalusian coast has streets lined with English tearooms, pubs and red post boxes.

Gibraltar isn’t simply a Brit abroad. Its rocky peak, accessible by cable car, has stunning views of the Mediterranean, the Atlantic and Morocco’s Rif mountains. There is also a nature reserve, home to its Barbary Macaque monkeys, and its slopes conceal stalactite-filled limestone grottos such as the dramatic St Michael’s Cave. While the town centre has busy plazas such as Grand Casement Square and a museum charting the city’s history, most visitors on holiday in Gibraltar come here to relax, drinking in waterside bars around the marina, gambling in the casino or visiting the small sandy beaches at Catalan and Sandy Bay.
