Overview

A quiet, friendly property just outside Funchal, The Residence is a great hotel for self-catering in Madeira. There are leafy grounds with restaurants and bars, plus a selection of indoor and outdoor pools in the wider resort.

The hotel is situated on more than 13,000m2 of property with dedicated gardens. It’s also less than two miles from the centre of Funchal, the largest city on the island. The seafront promenade and a community lido are all that separate you from the Atlantic Ocean, just 100 metres away, and you can enjoy gorgeous sea views at the resort.

The Residence attracts plenty of return visitors, which gives it a real community feel. The apartments are spacious, allowing three or more to comfortably share the rooms. The microwave, fridge and tea and coffee facilities make self-catering a breeze, and there’s a nearby supermarket for all-important milk runs.

Part of the larger Villa Porto Mare Resort, The Residence provides access to multiple facilities, including a selection of indoor and outdoor pools. Kids can splash about and make friends in their dedicated aqua area. Mini-golf is available on site, as are tennis, table tennis, snooker and petanque. The hotel provides water aerobics, yoga and Pilates classes, too.

Treat yourself to a selection of massages and treatments at The Spa at Porto Mare, which houses a steam bath, a sauna and seven treatment rooms. Book a manicure or pedicure with leading spa professionals at ESPA, or simply relax on the sun loungers around the lagoon pool.

Dining information

There are restaurant and bars on site. Stop by the Atlântida Restaurant for international daily themed buffets. Staying on half-board allows you evening meals here. Alfama is an a la carte restaurant that serves Portuguese fare, and Il Basilico serves Italian cuisine for lunch and dinner.

You can also find light bites at the Varanda pool bar. The Oceano Bar boasts live music, and Portofino Bar hosts regular Happy Hours with discounted drinks.

In response to Coronavirus (COVID-19) you will be required to wear a face mask in all indoor public areas. The pool will operate at a limited capacity and the sauna, Jacuzzi and Turkish bath remain closed until further notice.
