Paris, France (£1 + 16,000 Avios)

The lowdown: Paris never fails to please. Whether you’re after historic palaces or hipster boutiques, grandiose museums or gourmet restaurants, it is one of the most beautiful and beguiling cities in the world.

If you only do one thing… They may not be the height of Parisian chic, but don a pair of comfy walking shoes and explore the City of Light by foot (the French have a word for strolling aimlessly: “flâner”). Wander the arrondissements, all of which have their own personality, before hitting the capital's stylish side streets for an afternoon of shopping.

Don’t leave without trying… Soak up authentic cafe culture by bagging a table at Les Deux Magots, Cafe de Flore or Brasserie Lipp in the artsy Saint-Germain-de-Prés district. Once favoured by everyone from the Surrealists to Brigitte Bardot, they’re the places to people watch.

Already visited Paris? With £1 + 16,000 Avios, you could also fly to Aberdeen, Basel, Bordeaux, Copenhagen, Edinburgh, Geneva, Glasgow, Innsbruck, Lyon, Marseille, Munich, Nice, Salzburg, and Toulouse.

Les Deux Magots opens everyday from 07.30 to 01.00. Stop by for breakfast and try Le Petit Déjeuner Hemingway with a cup of old-style hot chocolate.

    Did you know…?

Munich Old Town’s main streets were pedestrianised for the 1972 Olympic Games and have stayed pedestrian ever since making it ideal for sightseeing on foot.

Munich, Germany (£1 + 16,000 Avios)

The lowdown: From Marienplatz Square to the Hofbräuhaus beer hall, Germany’s unofficial southern capital is extremely easy on the eye. Architecture aside, the Bavarian city has a rich cultural and gastronomic heritage and is renowned for its lively atmosphere.

If you only do one thing… Discover the charm of Munich on two wheels. Thanks to the city’s comprehensive network of cycling paths, you could be whizzing around the beautiful Old Town, coasting along the banks of the River Isar or pedaling leisurely through the Englischer Garten (Munich's Central Park), where the park’s two beer gardens make the perfect pitstop.

Don’t leave without trying… Müncheners love to eat and nowhere is this more apparent than the food markets. The best-known is the enormous Viktualienmarkt, and for local cheese, meat and homemade beer head to Elisabethmarkt. At Christmas, sipping a Glühwein while perusing the stalls at the Munich Christmas market is a must.

Already visited Munich? With £1 + 16,000 Avios, you could also fly to Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Genoa, Hamburg, Jersey, Manchester, Milan, Newcastle, Prague, Stuttgart, and Zurich.

Rome, Italy (£1 + 22,000 Avios)

The lowdown: This sprawling capital city - which is steeped in history - offers the perfect blend of classical architecture and antiquities with stylish shops, animated eateries and a flourishing contemporary art scene.

If you only do one thing… Channel your inner Spartacus and join a Colosseum tour, which offers direct access into the ancient world’s largest amphitheatre from the special gladiator’s gate. After exploring the arena floor, make your way up to the stands to better understand what it would have been like when they were packed with a baying, bloodthirsty crowd.

Don’t leave without trying… La Cucina Roma is - like everywhere in Italy - plate-lickingly good. Try the feather-light deep-fried Roman artichokes at Nonna Betta; a steaming bowl of pasta at Trattoria da Enzo in Trastevere; and finish off with a trip to Gelateria del Teatro with its pastel-hued display of unusual flavours - lavender and white peach, anyone?

Already visited Rome? With £1 + 22,000 Avios, you could also fly to Algiers, Barcelona, Bari, Bologna, Budapest, Dubrovnik, Faro, Gibraltar, Helsinki, Lisbon, Madrid, Malaga, Naples, Oslo, Pisa, Stockholm, Venice, Verona, and Warsaw.

  • Colusseum, Rome.

Thessaloniki, Greece (£1 + 27,000 Avios)

The lowdown: With Byzantine monuments to explore by day and cool cocktail bars to party in at night, Greece’s bustling port city seamlessly blends the past with the present.

If you only do one thing… You can’t visit Thessaloniki and not take in the ancient White Tower - it is the symbol of the city after all. Climb to the terrace on the sixth floor for Instagram-worthy views of the waterfront, before swotting up on your Hellenic history at the museum.

Don’t leave without trying… A veritable melting pot of cuisines (you’ll find eastern and Mediterranean flavours here), this is the go-to city for gastronomes. Thanks to the Ottoman’s sweet tooth, the bakeries are star of the show. Treat yourself to trigona panoramatos - crunchy pastries, soaked in syrup and filled with cream - at the Elenidis bakery.

Already visited Thessaloniki? With £1 + 27,000 Avios, you could also fly to Athens, Bucharest, Istanbul, Kiev, Larnaca, Marrakech, Moscow, Paphos, Sofia, St Petersburg and Tirana.
