Things to do in Athens

As one of the world’s oldest cities you’d expect to discover an enchanting world of history and awe-inspiring ruins but there are plenty of things to see and do in Athens that bring the city into modern day.

Spend your days intertwining the wonders of the past and present. Get a close up glimpse of the Acropolis –a fascinating cluster of ancient ruins, or admire it from afar as you enjoy dinner or a late night drink. Spend your days shopping and sightseeing and your evenings dining in Michelin-starred eateries, like Funky Gourmet, or listening to traditional Greek music whilst sampling authentic Greek cuisine.

Athens offers plenty of opportunity for shopping - you’ll find bustling pedestrianised streets, bazaar style stores and traditional markets bursting with local produce. The city boasts a great range of shopping, from everyday stores on Ermou, Athens busiest shopping street, to upmarket shopping and designer boutiques in Kolonaki. Pick up some custom made sandals at Stavros Melissinos Art Shop or handmade olivewood carvings for an authentically Greek keepsake.

A trip to Athens wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Acropolis, undoubtedly the city’s most famous site. The large hill lies in the centre of the city and contains a cluster of ancient ruins. The Acropolis Museum houses important Greek statues – pop in after seeing the Acropolis itself. See ancient artefacts at the National Archaeological Museum or visit the impressive Temple of Olympian Zeus.

You’ll find plenty of options for dining across Athens, whether you’re looking for the finest Michelin-starred cuisine or just reasonably priced homemade specialities. Stop at the Piazza Duomo in Mitropoleos, an all-day Italian coffee bar and restaurant located in the heart of Athens – make sure you try the homemade moussaka.  Or ask for rooftop seating at Strofi and take advantage of the amazing views of the Acropolis.
