There are many sleepy towns and villages to discover along the way, giving a feeling of driving a path that is less travelled. Places to stop off on the way include Frenton, Agen and Langon.

Basking in the glory of its recent appointment as a UNESCO World Heritage site, this lovely red-brick town has a half-timbered city centre and an imposing fortress-like cathedral. Toulouse-Lautrec, of Moulin Rouge fame, came from here and Albi showcases over 1,000 paintings, lithographs, drawings and posters by the artist, as well as some of his personal belongings. The largest carnival in southwest France takes place here every year, but it’s also worth visiting for the riverside walks, old stone bridges and classical French gardens.
The witch’s hat turrets and walled-in city of Carcassonne make it not only a UNESCO World Heritage site, but also a spectacular backdrop for the fireworks on Bastille Day (14 July). Only 44 miles from Toulouse, this rocky outcrop was one of the final outposts for the Cathars, the local people of southwest France, as they sheltered from the Pope’s crusade in the 13th century. You can cycle here from Toulouse along another UNESCO World Heritage site: the Canal du Midi.
A theme park based on space and the exploration of space and is is another of Toulouse's "aviation" attractions. It is a scientific theme park without rides. There are some replicas of spacecraft and other exhibits, with many of the latter interactive in some minor way, there is also a small planetarium. The park is suited for 5-14 year old children. It is situated out of Toulouse, so perfect for a family trip with Avis car hire.
