Phoenix feels like a city dropped in the middle of the desert. Arizona’s state capital is surrounded by sand and bathed in golden rays year-round – in fact, it’s one of the USA's sunniest cities. The good news? You’re almost guaranteed great weather for adventures in the country’s fifth largest metropolis.
Fly to Phoenix with British Airways and you can hike across the Sonoran Desert, watching the sun highlight the towering cliff formations that make up the Arizona skyline. One of the best spots for hiking is South Mountain Park, with over 50 trails on offer. Meanwhile, the Desert Botanical Garden is the perfect place to learn about the different species of plants that thrive in the region’s sizzling temperatures. There’s plenty to do in the city too, from Tex-Mex restaurants to monthly art walks that tick off the city's galleries and street performers. The sunshine in Phoenix attracts the ‘snowbirds’ – visitors from northern states in the US seeking warmer weather during the snowy winter months. This means the city gets busy from November to April, and prices for everything from flights to hotels can be higher. The soaring temperatures in the summer often mean fewer visitors, so it can be a more affordable time to visit if you’re trying to save.
You can adjust your trip to Phoenix to fit your budget. Camelback Mountain is one of the USA’s best spots for experienced hikers and it won’t cost you anything to walk the trail. Meanwhile, some of Phoenix’s museums offer free entry or reduced fees on certain days, including the Heard Museum, the Phoenix Art Museum, and the Children’s Museum of Phoenix.
You can hop in a taxi to reach Phoenix’s downtown area, or make use of the Valley Metro system, which offers transport via rail, streetcar and bus. Once you’re in the city centre, there are lots of public transport options to get you from A to B.
Phoenix lines up gorgeous weather all year round, so you can enjoy patio drinks, days lounging by the swimming pool and games of golf on the city’s pristine courses whenever you visit. Catch the cacti and wildflowers blooming in the desert during the spring, and head to the Grand Canyon if you want to see the Arizona’s northern stretch – it’s day-tripping distance from Phoenix.
