Including St Basil’s Cathedral’s onion domes and the high red walls of the Kremlin, Moscow’s monuments are among the most immediately recognisable anywhere in the world.

You’ll soon notice that even theatres and shops are built on a vast scale here – both the Bolshoi Theatre, home to the world’s greatest ballet company, and the GUM department store are among the world’s largest. But there’s more to Moscow holidays than just looking up in awe. There’s real walkable intimacy to the restaurant-filled area around the Patriarch’s Ponds, setting for Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita, while hip Muscovites fill the bars in the Kitay-gorod neighbourhood’s knot of old lanes. The city has offbeat sights like the Museum of Astronautics (a space museum), a museum devoted to Soviet arcade games and many places to just relax, including the sumptuous 19th century Sanduny baths. And just beyond the city are the Khimki Forest and sights such as the elaborate Sergiev Posad monastery and the dacha summerhouse colony at Peredelkino, once home to Boris Pasternak.
