Amsterdam holidays

Make like a local and hire a bike to best explore the streets of Amsterdam. Frequent the Jordaan area for some of the best gay nightlife, hotels and restaurants, including cosy cocktail bar De Trut. Check out Homomonument by artist Karin Daan near the Keizersgracht Canal, the world’s first monument of its kind dedicated to people persecuted because of their sexuality.

Barcelona holidays

The balmy beachfront city of Barcelona oozes with quirky architecture, vivacious festivals and gastronomic highlights. Stroll the pathways of this eclectic city, wander past the iconic Sagrada Familia and people watch afternoons away on an outdoor terrace in the Gothic Quarter over plates of tantalising tapas. Your eyes will light up as you gaze at the street art in El Raval before you sip on a sangria in one of its bohemian bars.

Berlin city breaks

It’s not Germany’s richest city – nor its prettiest. Instead, Berlin satisfies a different itch: it’s for fun seekers, culture cravers and, of course, ravers. There are museums (the city has 170 in total), there’s Soviet architecture and 21st century street art. Check out a drag show in Yumbo Centre, the home of the bi-annual Freedom Festival. Sunbathe nude on Maspalomas Beach with views of the dunes and then hang out at beach bar Kiosco Number 7, a beloved ‘clothing optional’ meeting point for the LGBTQ+ community. Catch a spectacular sunset on the wild, remote and natural Gui-Gui Beach and you’ll likely have the place to yourselves.

London city breaks

Richard E Grand once said "The sheer variety of cultural things you can do in London is such that you’d need a couple of lifetimes to take advantage of it". With some of the most iconic (and oldest) museums in the world. Aside from its fascinating lineage, the Royal Observatory also offers stunning views of the capital, including the skyline of Canary Wharf.

Los Angeles holidays

LA’s beating heart has migrated east over the last decade, away from West Hollywood to Silverlake and Highland Park, but most of all, to Downtown LA, where a once noir-feeling, ghost town is now a centre of revival in art, culture and food. Westsiders should take a drive down the PCH for a few miles with the music blaring. Bring water, sunscreen and some decent boots and you can go for a brief hike up the Paseo Miramar trail.

This September Valletta hosted EuroPride 2023 boosting its growing LGBTQ+ credentials, giving you yet another reason to visit. The Old Town, dating back to the 16th Century, charms with its Baroque influences and limestone buildings. Elsewhere you can take a trip to the island of Gozo and sample its rolling hills, snorkel in the tranquil Blue Lagoon on Comino and quaff surprisingly good Maltese wine in one of its many wineries.

If partying is high up on your agenda, Mykonos will not disappoint. It also boasts spectacular beaches and a cultured old town dotted with sugar-cube houses, blue-domed churches and iconic windmills. Constantly compared to St Tropez and Ibiza, this designer island certainly caters to an A-list crowd - with its label-laden shops, luxury accommodation and uber-cool dining and nightlife. But it shouldn’t be overlooked by those seeking less glitz and glam and more island-hopping adventures.

Drive through flower-strewn lowlands and pass picturesque canals to funky capital Amsterdam with its exciting blend of culture, history and late-night partying. From the bright lights of Times Square to the swanky boutiques of the Upper East Side, New York is home to dozens of neighbourhoods, each with a unique personality and distinctive must-sees. Locals will tell you that the Top of the Rock Observation Deck – 70 storeys above ground in the Rockefeller Center – is where to catch the most dramatic sunset in Manhattan. Feeling arty? The Museum of Modern Art is without a doubt one of the world’s must-see museums.

Take a leisurely stroll along the fabulous Promenade des Anglais. The charming thoroughfare is dotted with pergolas, kiosks and palm trees and connects several of the city’s best beaches. Hang out in the trendy, gay-friendly area of Rue Bonaparte, packed with cool cocktail bars, nightclubs and restaurants, it’s fast becoming known as ‘Petit Marais’. Dine at Le Sunset a lovely LGBTQ+-owned seafront restaurant on the Prom famed for its cabaret and drag nights. True foodies flock to Cours Saleya Market in the Old Town, where vendors sell the freshest authentic Nicoise produce, alongside tempting street food such as socca pancakes.

San Francisco holidays

With a pioneering culture that dates back to the Gold Rush, San Francisco is also famously laidback and brimming with quirky character. San Francisco’s cable cars can take you “halfway to the stars” as Tony Bennett, who famously left his heart here, once sang. Enjoy a ride down from Nob Hill to the waterfront on the California line, and it’s a short walk to the Embarcadero waterfront.

Visit Sweden's arctic north for mountainous wilderness or the eastern Baltic coast for rocky islands. Staying safe

It’s prudent to take care when travelling, here are some helpful tips before you go:

Plan your itinerary and research local laws and social attitudes on every place you intend to visit.
Check that your accommodation accepts same-sex couples before you book.
Ensure you have the right documentation to be allowed entry, given there are some common heteronormative expectations.
Stay street smart and stick to busy, well-lit streets when walking after dark.

As well as informing you of important cultural differences, including attitudes to LGBTQ+, it will also serve to protect you from terrorism, theft and violence. The IGLTA (International LGBTQ+ Travel Association) can provide supplementary guidance too.
