In May the town also plays host to the Pourpre Périgord Jazz Festival (the Bergerac jazz festival). In July, the wine and food festival takes place, culminating in an extravagant fireworks display over the River Dordogne. And at the beginning of October, the grape harvesting festival takes place transforming the region’s farms and vineyards.

Culture & Museums

This well-preserved medieval town is a pleasure to walk around. You’ll soon be distracted by the varied architecture and historical buildings of Vieille Ville (Old Town). Lined with half-timbered buildings along Rue du Mourrier and Renaissance façades along Rue des Fontaines and Rue St-James. The impressive Romanesque church of Saint Jacques, the 19th-century Notre Dame de Bergerac on Rue de la Resistance, the fountain on Place Pélissière, and the statue of Cyrano de Bergerac on Place de la Mirpe, are equally as impressive. Don’t overlook the Musée du Tabac too – it may be a little peculiar, but it is housed in the stunning 16th-century Maison Peyrarède, with a Renaissance flair and cantilevered tower, it was once visited by Louis XIII.
