The capital of India’s Karnataka state, Bangalore – also known as Bengaluru – is one of the nation’s boomtowns, thanks to it being the home of the country’s IT and tech industries. Although Bangalore’s businesses have raised its international profile, this modern, energetic city’s arts and culture scenes are reason to visit alone.
Fly direct from London to Bangalore with British Airways to discover India’s third largest city for yourself. Get acquainted with Bangalore’s arts scene at the established National Gallery of Modern Art. Then for something a little different, venture to the Sublime Galleria, perched on the bridge connecting two prominent towers. This is India’s first sky gallery and home to an ever-changing line-up of contemporary art and photography. It’s housed in UB City, a luxury shopping mall with equally high-end restaurants and bars for some post-sightseeing refuelling. Less modern but just as striking is The Bangaluru Palace, a 19th-century landmark that’s inspired by Windsor Palace. It’s open to the public and you’ll find an amusement park and even the occasional rock concert taking place in its grounds. Your rupees will go far in Bangalore, where even the luxury hotels and restaurants cost less than in equivalent big cities across Asia. There are entry fees for most museums and galleries, but they won’t break the bank. Visiting the Botanical Garden for a morning stroll is free if you enter between 6am and 9am.
For eating out on a budget, you can’t beat the evening vegetarian food markets at VV Puram. You’ll find authentic local and national specialties, plus some excellent Chinese food. Head there just after 5pm before it gets too busy.
Bangalore Airport is 30km outside the city and there are plenty of taxis to take you straight there. A more budget-friendly option is to take the air-conditioned bus service that runs to various locations throughout the city.
Once you’re in the city centre, most people travel on the many auto-rickshaws that line the busy streets. There’s also an inexpensive Metro service in Bangalore, which takes the heat off the congested streets.
This buzzing metropolis has plenty to keep visitors entertained, from fine dining and shopping to live music and nightlife. Bangalore is known for its rock scene so head to one of the many live music venues across the city to get involved, like Windmills Craftworks – a microbrewery, restaurant and music venue in the upscale Whitefield neighbourhood.
Beyond the busy streets and high-octane entertainment venues, the city’s green spaces are perfect for recharging your batteries. Visit the LalBagh Botanical Garden – a beautifully kept space complete with a bandstand, glass house and over 1,000 species of plants. Then there’s Cubbon Park right in the city centre, which has been open since 1870. Its 300 acres are a welcome retreat for locals and visitors alike – and there’s also a library and museum to explore while you’re there.
