Lagos earns its status as one of the world’s fastest growing megacities: the hustle is hard and the bumper-to-bumper pace relentless as property developments mushroom faster than you can say African powerhouse.

After nightfall, ‘Eko’ (as the locals call it), the birthplace of Afrobeat and Nigerian cinema or Nollywood, revs up a notch with its thrilling club and infectious live music scene, particularly on Victoria Island – and the party lasts until sunrise. At the weekend the revelry extends to the city’s various beaches, many of which are surprisingly good – though they’re more about socialising than sunbathing. No one is going to pretend that crime, corruption and chaos aren't features of Lagos life. You will need your wits about you. But if you like a place where they really do live life to the full, then Lagos is it.
