Palma

Palma is the largest city of the Balearic Islands, with cosmopolitan and sophisticated residents taking the city into a new age. Cool wine bars, hip new restaurants and a late night culture make Palma enticing to fans of city breaks. Add to this modern cultural highlights and contemporary art galleries, and you have a city destined for change. For a local feel head into the area east of Placa Major, where the young Palmarites hang out, for independent bars and an atmosphere not unlike Barcelona’s eclectic charm.

Palma’s Old Town

Stay at the enchanting Can Bordoy to fully enjoy the charm of Palma’s Old Town. The streets here are narrow and shaded, dotted with quaint cafés and upmarket shops. Escape the midday sun on the leafy thoroughfare Passeig des Born, grab a glass of wine and enjoy people watching. Don’t miss a trip to the beautiful Parc de la Mar just opposite the Cathedral, or wander over to the Parque de la Feixina next to the Es Baluard Museum of Modern Art.

Cala d’Or

The east coast resort of Cala d’Or, like many of the island’s resorts, evolved from a small fishing village. Now you will find a bustling and popular resort, which has kept its Majorcan charm and has a sophisticated collection of bars and restaurants. The picturesque turquoise waters of its seven sandy calas (coves) are perfect for swimming and watersports, becoming sun-traps in the afternoon sun. Sierra del Tramuntana

The spectacular Sierra del Tramuntana mountain range dominates the northern coastline of Mallorca, with its jagged and spiny limestone peaks jutting into the sky. Village communities sit nestled in valleys and along the coastal promontories – Valldemossa, Deià and Sóller make up three of the major villages in the range. Valldemossa is known for its spectacular views and quaint atmosphere, while Deià is great for traditional restaurants and the Belmond Residencia, a beautiful former stately home. Head to Sóller for hiking and the Iglesia Parroquial de Sant Bartomeu church, created by one of Gaudi’s students.

Pollença and Puerto Pollença

On the opposite side of the island to Palma, you will find the beautiful town of Pollença. Like a lot of towns in Majorca, it was built inland to protect it from invading seafaring marauders. Surrounded by stunning scenery, the village is a great area to start exploring the northern coastline. Stay at the Hoposa Pollentia for its idyllic location. Just four miles down the road you will find Puerto Pollença, an impressive resort town perfect for family holidays with a spectacular beach and lively marina. Dine on the freshly caught fish and seafood at the local seafront restaurants, you will not be disappointed.
