You can fly from Southampon to Bergerac-Roumanière Airport (EGC) in just 1 hour 30 minutes.

Surprisingly there are no public buses from Bergerac Airport and there is no train line close by either. You can grab a taxi, but we recommend hiring a car – all mandatory charges are included and you’ll earn Avios on every rental. Or why not pre-book an airport transfer before you travel. You’ll be given the opportunity to add a door-to-door transfer once you’ve booked your Bergerac flight or holiday.

Wine tours

For the perfect introduction to the regions’ wine, head straight to La Maison des Vins de Bergerac (House of Wines), in Place du Docteur Cayla. You’ll not only see how local wines are produced, you’ll also have the opportunity to taste some of the best vinos too. Just four miles outside of Bergerac, you’ll stumble across a fairy tale castle with turreted towers – this is Chateau de Monbazillac, the producers of the much desired sweet white Monbazillac. Take a tour and visit the impressive wine cellar to stock up. Château de Tiregand, to the east of Bergerac, is a popular choice for red wine.

Gourmet breaks

Bergerac’s longstanding reputation for wine, foie gras and black truffles, takes it to the top of the list for gourmet breaks. Begin your journey at La Maison des Vins de Bergerac, at Recollets Convent, and learn about the wine-making process. Then explore a selection of little dishes on one plate at Le Plat dans l'Assiette, consisting of black pudding, charcuterie, lentils, duck, sausages, salad and potatoes. Or treat yourself to the gastronomic fare at Le Terroir, widely held by locals as one of Bergerac's best restaurants.

Shopping

La Maison des Vins de Bergerac is the perfect place to pick up a bottle or two of vino - the 1996 Reserve Monbazillac is one to look out for and makes the perfect aperitif. Then pop along to Valette for a tin of duck foie gras with truffles to complete a much-loved trilogy of the finest products this region has to offer. The local markets are also very popular – head to the church of Notre-Dame every Saturday and Wednesday mornings, or visit the evening markets held on Fridays. The flea market takes place on each first Sunday morning of the month.

Festivals

Bergerac may have a somewhat sleepy reputation, but the old harbour quarter is becoming increasingly lively with bars and restaurants, bringing a vibrancy to the port, particularly at night. In May the town also plays host to the Pourpre Périgord Jazz Festival (the Bergerac jazz festival). In July, the wine and food festival takes place, culminating in an extravagant fireworks display over the River Dordogne. And at the beginning of October, the grape harvesting festival takes place transforming the region’s farms and vineyards.

Culture & Museums

This well-preserved medieval town is a pleasure to walk around. You’ll soon be distracted by the varied architecture and historical buildings of Vieille Ville (Old Town). Lined with half-timbered buildings along Rue du Mourrier and Renaissance façades along Rue des Fontaines and Rue St-James. The impressive Romanesque church of Saint Jacques, the 19th-century Notre Dame de Bergerac on Rue de la Resistance, the fountain on Place Pélissière, and the statue of Cyrano de Bergerac on Place de la Mirpe, are equally as impressive. Don’t overlook the Musée du Tabac too – it may be a little peculiar, but it is housed in the stunning 16th-century Maison Peyrarède, with a Renaissance flair and cantilevered tower, it was once visited by Louis XIII.
