The Puglia region is popular with visitors but it’s no more expensive to travel, dine and stay in the area than other areas of Italy. If you’re on a budget, you may just want to avoid the busy months of July and August when the prices – and temperatures – rise.

Brindisi Airport is just a 10-minute taxi ride to the city centre or a 15-minute journey by bus, with services running every 30 minutes. Once you’re in Brindisi, it’s easy to navigate the city’s narrow streets and seafront promenades on foot. For exploring further afield, there are regular trains and buses to destinations like Lecce, Ostuni and Gallipoli.

While Brindisi is a gateway to Puglia, the Greek Islands and beyond, its charm and history mean you’ll be missing out if you’re only passing through. Head out on a walking tour of the city to discover all its archaeological wonders, then visit the Brindisi Provincial Archaeological Museum to see the 7th-century terracotta figurines, Roman statues and a vast collection of bronze sculptures.

Don’t miss the striking Piazza Duomo, where the city’s 12th-century cathedral stands proudly. Then, amble through the attractive streets over to the port, where you’ll see the ancient Roman columns in all their glory. They’re thought to have been built to mark the end of the Via Appia, an ancient road that led all the way to Rome.

After a day’s sightseeing, swing by one of the many gelaterias and find a prime spot at the harbour to see the boats bobbing on the water as the sun sets.
