Per person,

Provence’s vibrant and picturesque port city

Fly to Marseille with British Airways and head for the Vieux Port, or ‘Old Port’, to sample a traditional bouillabaisse, the famous fish soup that originated in the city.

Then, catch the mini-train to Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde, an 800-year-old Byzantine monument perched 157 metres up on the hill above the city. Soak up the views before heading back down into the action in the city centre. Wander down La Canebière, Marseille’s main street, picking up souvenirs before refuelling with coffee or pastis – another treat hailing from the city.

If you want to explore Marseille’s natural world in the nearby Calanques National Park, hop on a boat from the Old Port to visit one of the many creeks and beaches – the nearest are less than half an hour away – or hike the clifftop trails overlooking the coast. Just don’t forget your walking boots. Book your holiday to Marseille now.

Marseille flight FAQs

A flight from London to Marseille takes approximately two hours.

Like many European destinations, the best time to find cheap flights to Marseille is outside of the summer months, between June and September. However, the city’s location just west of the French Riviera means it always has a moderate climate, which makes it possible to enjoy outdoor activities all year round. Alongside strolling between the cultural hotspots and enjoying an aperitif on the terrace, the city is much quieter, so you can enjoy it without crowds.

Marseille Provence Airport is located 27km away from the city centre, and the easiest and cheapest way to make the journey is by shuttle bus. Buses leave every 10 minutes from the stations outside the terminals and can take up to 50 minutes to reach the city.

Once you’re in Marseille, it’s a great city to see on foot – it’s possible to get from the Old Port to the Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde, two of the city’s must-see sights, in as little as 40 minutes.

Marseille has many local markets, including the centrally located open-air Marché des Capucins, which sells affordable local produce six days a week.  It’s a great way to save on the cost of food if you’re staying in self-catered accommodation or if you’re looking for picnic supplies before heading to the Calanques. Seek out the many neighbourhood kiosks and well-priced pizzerias as another alternative at mealtimes and opt for a hotel in the Saint Victor district – prices tend to be cheaper than other areas, but it’s still close to the action.

France’s second city seamlessly blends the past and future. As the European Capital of Culture in 2013, there’s plenty to keep you busy. Visit the world-class museums, including the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations, and sample the multicultural cuisine alongside classic French dishes. And while it’s easy to create an all-action itinerary, Marseille is also a fantastic option for a long, lazy weekend enjoying the coastal scenery and quieter quarters of the city.
