Melbourne flight FAQs

A flight from London to Melbourne International airport takes approximately 23 hours.

Melbourne’s climate is slightly cooler than the more northerly cities of Sydney and Brisbane, making it a popular destination year-round. Prices do tend to drop in Australia’s late autumn and winter, with the best times to find deals on flights usually between March and August. Because Melbourne is known for delivering fantastic indoor cultural attractions, including restaurants, theatre and live music, as well as a packed schedule of sporting events, it’s still a great time to visit. Australia’s school holidays run from December to January, which impacts prices. Use our low fare finder to find the cheapest time to visit Melbourne.

Melbourne is a city that caters to any budget. Because of its student population you’ll have no problem finding affordable places to eat and drink. The lively St Kilda neighbourhood is popular with backpackers and a great place to seek out well-priced entertainment and accommodation. The Queen Victoria Market is a great place for a wallet-friendly meal, with more than 600 traders selling street food and essentials for picnics.

If you’re in town for the Australian Open in January, head to Tennis Australia’s booth in Federation Square to pick up face-value tickets. If you're after some Australia Rules Football action, it's often possible to walk in for free around 90-minutes after kick-off to see the last 30 minutes of the action.

The SkyBus Express Bus Service runs a regular service from Melbourne Airport to the city centre every 10 minutes, 24 hours a day. Taxis are also available, and the journey by car takes around 30 minutes. Using Melbourne’s excellent public transport system is the easiest and best way to get around the city once you arrive. The City Circle Tram is a free service around central Melbourne taking passengers past major attractions.

Melbourne's Night Network also provides 24-hour public transport on weekends, with round-the-clock trains and trams, late-night buses, and a 2am coach service to key regional centres.

You can also hire a car with British Airways if you want to get out of the city and see more of what Victoria has to offer. You’ll receive great benefits, with all mandatory charges included and 24-hour customer support, plus you’ll collect Avios points on every rental.

Melbourne offers world-class attractions, nightlife and cultural events, but that’s just the start of what’s on offer on a break here. The surrounding state of Victoria is the perfect place for an adventure – hike the Grampians National Park, an area of outstanding National Beauty where you can discover Aboriginal rock art, or discover Yarra Valley, Victoria’s oldest wine region. An easy day trip from the city at only around an hour southeast of Melbourne, Mornington Peninsula is made for horseback tours. Saddle up and ride the trails that wind their way through the bushland. Don’t miss the chance to unwind after a long day by bathing in the geothermal waters of Peninsula Hot Springs.
