The most popular months for travel to Tokyo are March and April, when the city’s cherry blossoms bloom. Because of this, accommodation tends to be more expensive. Autumn is a popular time of year to visit Tokyo, when the temperature has cooled from the peak summer months of July and August. Winter is ideal for skiing, while the beaches in Okinawa enjoy year-round good weather.
Capsule hotels can be found in cities across Japan, and they provide unique and affordable accommodation. Guests sleep in bed-sized pods stacked on top of one another, and bathroom facilities are typically shared. Business hotels are also a budget-friendly option, with major chains operating nationwide.
Street food is easy to find across towns and cities in Japan, and it’s a great way to save money on meals.

Haneda Airport is the closest airport to Tokyo’s city centre, with four transport options available. The Tokyo Monorail and Keikyu train both take 20 minutes, while buses take between 40 to 55 minutes depending on traffic and depart every 30 to 60 minutes. A taxi takes around 30 minutes.
Trains are the most popular way for visitors to travel around Japan, and a fast and reliable service connects all of the country’s major cities. The biggest stations across Japan are all signposted and announced in English.

Bigger than both London and New York City, Tokyo is the perfect place to begin a longer trip around Japan.
