Cape Town holiday FAQs
- Explore the city’s centrepiece: Table Mountain. Hike with a guide or take the cableway to the top for a view of Cape Town laid out beneath you. Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden blooms on the eastern slopes, with lawns rolling into rustling forests. You can also taste bright Sauvignon Blanc and other wines in Constantia Valley beneath the mountain.
- Make the short ferry trip to Robben Island, best known for its use as a Maximum Security Prison during apartheid – Nelson Mandela was imprisoned here for 18 years. The island was also a prison during Colonial rule and an infirmary during the 19th Century. Today it pays homage to those who have faced adversity and fought against injustice. Visitors must book onto a Robben Island Museum Tour.
- Join a guided walking tour of Bo-Kaap. In the 18th Century, this neighbourhood’s rental houses were built and leased to slaves from Malaysia, Indonesia and other parts of Africa. Today, Bo-Kaap is known for its vibrant streets – lined with houses painted in colours like bright pink and lime green – and its Cape Malay food. Learn more about the area at the Bo-Kaap Museum and make sure to taste some sticky koesisters before you leave.
- Head to Llandudno Beach near Hout Bay. Grand houses and granite boulders stand on the edge of the Atlantic here, watching the sea lap white sand. Mountains loom in the background – it’s all very dramatic. This beach is loved by locals for its natural scenery and relaxed atmosphere.
- Take a day trip to Hermanus to whale watch. This small town on Walker Bay is one of the best places in the world to see whales breach and twirl in the water. Visit between June and November for the best chance to see them. While you’re there, the whale crier’s kelp horn will tell you when to look towards the bay.
- Head to Franschhoek to find out why it’s known as the food and wine capital of South Africa. Enjoy a leisurely jaunt on the open-air wine tram, stopping to sip Semillon, stroll through fragrant vineyards and tuck into hearty food on a terrace overlooking the patchwork valley. Transfers from Cape Town and other nearby areas, such as Stellenbosch (which has its own wine route), are available.
- Cheap Cape Town holidays at Camps Bay Retreat are full of tranquil moments, surrounded by trickling waterfalls, streams and leaves. This boutique hotel in Camps Bay is set in a four-acre nature reserve on the edge of Table Mountain National Park, within walking distance of the area’s beloved beach.
- For luxury Cape Town holidays, Cape Grace Hotel by Fairmont is an obvious choice. This five-star hotel has hosted plenty of politicians and A-Listers – from the Clintons to Clint Eastwood – and its grand, auburn facade is instantly recognisable on a private quay in the V&A Waterfront area. Spacious rooms boast harbour, marina or Table Mountain views alongside glimmeringly opulent interiors.
- Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel is another legendary five-star hotel in Cape Town. Always pretty in pink, this pastel hotel at the foot of Table Mountain is all about glamour. Explore storied gardens and take tea in the Lounge, opting for the blush-coloured signature blend to match the hotel’s iconic colour scheme.
- Book a Cape town package holiday and relax from the get-go. Stay at the Steenberg Hotel and Spa in Constantia Valley to see vineyards and mountains stretching around you. This five-star hotel on a flourishing farm is an idyllic place to unwind, complete with a golf course and spa.
