Costa Rica holidays
An environmental nirvana, Costa Rica offers a treasure trove of natural attractions and a myriad of ecosystems teeming with wildlife. Discover rainbow-billed toucans, monkeys and sloths in jungles. See steaming volcanoes, bubbling mud pools and tangled mangroves before imbibing the buzz of its capital or relaxing on sugar-white sands.
Nature at its most intense
A biodiverse paradise, Costa Rica is flanked by the Caribbean and Pacific and covered with lush, protected jungle. In a country smaller than Scotland, you’ll discover 12 unique ecozones, while its 900 species of birds are the same in number as Australia or South Africa… and that’s just for taster.
Explore the jungles of the Osa Peninsula, spot sloths in Nicoya Peninsula and watch birds take flight around wetlands, dry tropical forests and rainforests. Stick your head in the clouds at Monteverde – one of few remaining high-altitude cloud forests, or flop on one of Costa Rica’s paradisical powdery beaches. Costa Rica’s natural landscapes are stunning, yet its delicate ecosystems thrive best when their birds, insects and animals are respected and watched from a distance. Book you flights to Costa Rica and start exploring.

Costa Rica holiday FAQs
- Soak in the hot springs of Arenal Volcano National Park and take the stepped path to the 200-ft iconic waterfall, La Fortuna – a perfect spot to cool down. While in Arenal, why not also tour a cacao farm and try your hand at chocolate making?
- See clouds of sulphurous smoke emerge from a volcano at the Parque Nacional Rincon de la Vieja. You can’t hike to (or near) its summit, but there are some impressive waterfalls and trails nearby where you could spot anything from pumas to parrots.
- Costa Rica is a real pull for birdwatchers, with around 900 species found there. Among them are hummingbirds, kingfishers, trogons, toucans and the incredibly striking quetzal.
- Corcovado National Park boasts 13 major ecosystems including cloud forest, coastal marine and rainforest. There’s a chance of spotting Costa Rica’s endangered (and often shy) creatures here, such as Baird’s tapir and red-backed squirrel monkeys. If you don’t see those, there are still a bewildering number of wildlife species including 40 of frog, 400 of bird (16 types of hummingbird alone) and 100 of butterfly.
- Learn about coffee production with a tour of El Toledo. This permaculture coffee plantation moves away from big business in favour of local agriculture and labour, and produces some interesting concoctions such as coffee fruit wine.
- Learn to salsa – you’ll hear the rhythm pounding almost everywhere in Costa Rica, making it difficult to resist joining in. You’ll find lots of salsa schools, especially around La Fortuna.
- For a dash of the surreal, head the Zarcero Garden where artist Evangelista Blanco has clipped ordinary shrubs into extraordinary things – look out for topiary portrayals of Jesus and some dinosaurs.
- Head to the Celeste River – a vivid blue body of water that looks so bright it could have been Insta -filtered. Sitting within the Tenorio Volcano National Park, it appears where two clearwater rivers converge to provide the perfect concentration of aluminosilicate particles needed to make light scatter in such a special way.
- Head to one of the most beautiful buildings in the country, the Teatro Nacional in San Jose. It opened in 1897 and has an ornate neoclassical facade, marble lobby and intricate gold interior that’s crammed with artworks.
- If it’s a cityscape you’re after, then head to central San Jose where the vibe is electric with eateries, museums and plazas. For historic architecture, head to the Barrios Amon, Otoya and Aranjuez neighbourhoods. If you want a serene spot – Escazu offers a tranquil escape and upmarket restaurants. For budget-beating food, try the colourful Mercado Central’s labyrinth of stalls selling traditional delicacies. Don’t miss the city’s museums, which include those dedicated to gold, jade and social history.
- Tortuguero is named after the thousands of giant Hawksbill and Green turtles that nest here from July to October (Leatherbacks come ashore earlier in the year). Venturing onto the beach without a guide is prohibited after 18:00 when the turtles appear.

Experts flock to Witch’s Rock at Playa Naranjo, on the Pacific coast in Guanacaste province. Also in the area, Playa Tamarindo and the nearby white sands of Playa Langosta are perfect for families. Nosara and Samara on the Nicoya Peninsula offer quieter beaches, as does Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio further south, with its viridescent rainforests.
