Lithium battery approval form

The purpose of this form is to request approval for spare lithium batteries that are between 100Wh and 160Wh, for example those used in Portable Electronic Devices (PEDs), like video or portable medical equipment.

A PED is a Portable Electronic Device. This is any piece of lightweight, electrically powered equipment. These devices are typically consumer electronic devices, capable of communications, data processing and/or computing. Examples are laptop computers, tablets, e-readers, smartphones, drones and electronic toys.

We don't accept batteries for:

Propulsion type devices for example e-skateboards, electric scooters or e-scooters, e-sea scooters or any water or underwater propulsion devices, e-bikes [main or back-up], hover karts, e-strollers or electric-powered baby/child prams and self-propelled ride-on baggage.

Before seeking approval, please be aware that to be allowed on board, British Airways must establish the following criteria:

  • Your battery(ies) are of a type that meets the requirements of the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria, Part III, subsection 38.3 for carriage by air. This is usually demonstrated by a UN38.3 test certificate, which is available from the manufacturer. Without this information your battery is unlikely to be accepted for travel.
  • The Watt hour [Wh] rating of the battery(ies)
  • Manufacturer
  • Battery model number(s)

If your battery(ies) are found to be acceptable for carriage, the maximum number permitted is two. British Airways will notify you regarding the status of your request by email.

Please note requests for Operator Approval must be submitted at least 7 days prior to departure to ensure time for your approval to be processed.

If you can provide the information above, please continue with the form.
