Is this your first trip to Windhoek? You'll fall in love with the
city's colourful German heritage, rich ethnic mix and picturesque setting amid
the hills of Central Namibia. Follow Independence Avenue to see
Windhoek's attractive mix of colonial and modern buildings. On return visits to
this cosmopolitan city, shop for crafts and curios from the stalls lining Post Street
Mall and familiarise yourself with Windhoek's colonial history at the
Old Fort museum.
Background
Get around compact Windhoek by following the city's formal grid of streets,
dominated by central Independence Avenue. Barter with craft sellers on
pedestrianised Post Street Mall, at right angles to Independence Avenue. Head over
to Robert Mugabe Avenue where you can learn about Namibian history at the
Windhoek's National Museum and African art at the National Gallery. After
lazing in the gardens of the formal Parliament Buildings nearby, take a walk along
Independence Avenue to the top of the town to photograph Windhoek's
signature statue of a proud kudu antelope.
First-time visit
Drop into the Christuskirche Lutheran church to admire its stained-glass
windows, soaring spire and mix of local sandstone and Italian marble. Get up to
speed on Namibia's history and culture at the National Museum and
National Gallery. Visit the museum housed in Windhoek's Old
Fort to see rock art and displays on Windhoek's early colonial
history. Take a well-earned break in the public gardens in front of the
Parliament Buildings then go shopping on Post Street Mall for
crafts to take back with you.
Return visit
Hire a guide to visit the lively market at the nearby township of Katutura. Go
for a stroll in the Daan Viljoen Game Park, west of Windhoek, and spot
zebras, springboks and all manner of birdlife. In the evening, wine and dine at
Windhoek's multicultural restaurants, and join in Windhoek's
vibrant nightlife at the city's cultural centres and clubs.
