Join the locals and dance in Trinidad and Tobago's streets during the February
Carnival, but come anytime to party in its lively capital, Port of Spain, on the
island of Trinidad. In the rainforest, the Asa Wright Nature Centre is a haven
for birdwatchers. Chill out on Tobago's beautiful white-sand beach at Pigeon
Point, or party all night on the beach at the small town of Buccoo.
Background
Discover how big the differences are between the two islands of this dual-island
nation. Go to Trinidad to wander the vibrant streets of the capital, Port
of Spain, or cast off on a yacht from the nearby marina in the small town of
Chaguaramas. Take it easy on Manzanilla, one of the quiet palm-fringed beaches on
Trinidad's east coast. On laid-back Tobago, it's all
about relaxation. Lie on Pigeon Point's fine white-sand beach, with
snorkelling and diving offshore. If you've had enough beach fun, head
inland to the lush Tobago Forest Reserve for beautiful rainforest
treks.
Urban
Visit Trinidad's Port of Spain for a bustling city that really comes
alive during Carnival. Escape the crowds in verdant Queen's Park
Savannah, where locals play cricket and fly kites. Walk along Maraval
Road and admire the ornate colonial buildings. Visit Tobago's
biggest town of Scarborough to smell the fresh blooms in its Botanical
Gardens. Then go to the 18th-century, British-built Fort King George
for breathtaking coastal views.
Rural
Take a boat trip from Trinidad to Gasparee Grande, a small area at the south
side of Chaguaramas Bay, to swim in tidal pools and visit caves dripping with
stalactites. Go hiking in rainforest-covered Asa Wright Nature Centre to spot
rare birds and wildlife. At Chaguanas, the birthplace of Nobel prize-winning
writer VS Naipaul, you can find traditional pottery. On Tobago, take a
glass-bottomed boat trip to Buccoo Bay and discover the full beauty of
Buccoo Reef. Later, dance the night away at the weekly Sunday School
street party just off the beach in Buccoo, with live music, DJs and stalls
selling food and drinks.
