Passport and visa check for customers with hand baggage only

If you've checked in online or at a Check-in kiosk at Terminal 5 and you are

  • flying longhaul
  • taking a shorthaul flight to
    - Moscow
    - St Petersburg
    - Tripoli
    - Kiev

you will need to go to one of the passport and visa check desks before going to Security.

This helps keep the flow of people through Security running smoothly.

If you have luggage for the hold:

  • your passport and visa will be checked at a Fast Bag Drop or Customer Service Desk

Online check-in

  • the easiest way to check in
  • best choice of available seats
  • open from 24 hours before your departure
  • available from the comfort of your home, office or hotel
  • saves time: pass straight on to Security at the terminal
  • drop check-in luggage at any of up to 96 Fast Bag Drops

It should only take around ten minutes to pass through security from the moment you arrive, (based on the average time it takes one passenger using a self service Check-in kiosk and checking in one bag at Fast Bag Drop on a normal operational day).

Ready to fly

To ensure we deliver the service you expect and avoid delays, you must pass through Check-in and Security and be ready to fly at least 35 minutes before your flight departs. If you miss this deadline, you will not be allowed on to your flight.

Security for UK Domestic flights

A digital photograph of all customers on UK Domestic flights from London Heathrow Terminal 5 will be taken at airport security. When boarding the flight, the photograph will be checked. Once checks are complete, all photographs will be deleted.

Lounge information

Terminal 5 has two departure buildings, Terminal 5A and Terminal 5B.

Terminal 5A

There are two Galleries Lounge complexes open in Terminal 5A

  • immediately after Security at the northern end of the building
  • downstairs after passing through Security at the southern end of the terminal

Note: the southern complex includes the Galleries Concorde Room and Galleries First Lounge.

Terminal 5B

Our Galleries Club lounge located in Terminal 5B will open once the majority of our long haul intercontinental flights have moved into Terminal 5.

Until then we encourage eligible customers to enjoy our lounges in Terminal 5A and only proceed to Terminal 5B when ready for boarding.
