A main venue of the 2006 Winter Olympic Games, Sestriere lies in the Italian Alps and forms a major part of the famous Milky Way ski area. The high-altitude, North West facing, slopes of Sestriere are broad and sunny. Complimented by extensive snowmaking facilities, this is a resort with a record of good quality, consistent snow cover. With the excellent variety of local terrain and access to other parts of the Milky Way ski area, Sestriere offers a huge amount of snow to cover. Off the slopes, there is a superb array of restaurants and cafés in which to relax and enjoy wonderfully decadent Piedmont cuisine. A peaceful town during the week, Sestriere’s après ski is lively at weekends when out-of-town visitors come to visit. Conveniently located close to Turin, with an extensive and varied array of terrain, Sestriere is a superb choice for a ski holiday.
Sestriere’s ski schools and guides are of a good standard and are well organised. However, this resort doesn’t cater particularly well for English-speaking visitors, so finding an English-speaking guide can be a little difficult. Nursery slopes are plentiful and there is a nice progression run down to Borgata.
Sestriere is well suited to intermediate skiing and snowboarding – the Sises and Motta areas of Sestriere offer plenty of great cruising. Chair lifts are increasingly plentiful, though snowboarders should note that there are still a lot of drag lifts.
Sestriere has Olympic-standard slalom runs and some long black pistes, offering a range of stiff challenges for experts. Both the top of Sises and Motta have steep pistes ideal for fast cruising. Off-piste, slopes are plentiful and challenging. The rest of the Milky Way ski area also offers fantastic off-piste terrain.
Sestriere’s ski schools offer tuition for children from ages 4 and above. Tuition and care for child students is excellent, although a lack of spoken English can be a problem. This isn’t a suitable resort for families who have non-skiing children as nursery and kindergarten facilities are lacking in Sestriere.
Sestriere is a popular resort for weekend skiers from Turin. As a result, après skitends to be laid back throughout the week and livelier at weekends. Eating out here, however, is consistently excellent. Wonderful Piedmonte cuisine can be found in restaurants such as La Baita, Tre Rubinetti and Lu Periol. Pinky offers simpler fare and a relaxed and trendy bar. Open late into the night, Prestige, Palace and Al Kovo are lively and vibrant venues that all offer a great après ski atmosphere.
