Verona holidays

Verona sparks with Italian charm: everything is done with passion here, from conversations over cappuccinos to impromptu soliloquys on Juliet’s balcony. Be wooed by summer operas in a Roman amphitheatre and fall in love at first sight with a plate of risotto all’amarone. There’s more than romance in the air, too – there’s also the perfume of orange trees in Renaissance gardens and the scent of ancient manuscripts in the world’s oldest active library.

Where we lay our scene for a sweet holiday

Shakespeare famously set his story of star-crossed lovers in Verona, but he’s not the only writer with connections to the city. Dante spent time here while exiled from Florence, dipping into the archives at Capitular Library, and Goethe is known to have admired the cypresses in Giardino Giusti. Nearby, Lake Garda also captivates those prone to poetic musings: DH Lawrence once described how ‘the mountains are dark blue’ and ‘the light burns gold’ around Italy’s largest lake.

Start at Juliet’s house, where you’ll likely hear ‘Romeo, Romeo’ called out across the cobblestones at least once. Then move through blush-coloured medieval streets and stand beneath rose windows in basilicas. Climb to a castle terrace and see the sun glow over terracotta rooftops. Come dusk, wax lyrical about the city as you sip Verona vino in a piazza. Book flights to Verona now and start planning a holiday you won’t want to end. Parting is such sweet sorrow, and all that.

Best hotels in Verona for all types of traveller

Our selection of Verona hotels includes central boutiques and remote resorts. The Due Torri Hotel is set in a 14th Century palace in the historic centre, boasting rooms adorned with period furniture and a terrace affording panoramic views. Hotel Indigo Verona – Grand Hotel Des Arts is also centrally located: its 1920s Liberty-style facade shines over Corso Porta Nuova.

If you’re looking to stay in Lake Garda, Hotel Gardenia is ideal for a sunny getaway in the southern shore town of Sirmione. Over on the lake’s western shore, otherwise known as Riviera dei Limoni, you’ll find Lefay Resort & SPA Lago Di Garda sprawled over 11 hectares of natural park. The view from the infinity pool is awe-inspiring.

Further afield, Lefay Resort & SPA Dolomiti offers views of the UNESCO-listed Dolomites. Stare at the Alps from a sauna or breathe in the fresh mountain air as you admire panoramic views from the outdoor pool. If you visit in winter, you’ll also be able to glide down nearby ski slopes.

Verona holiday FAQs

  • Porta Nuova was the original gateway to Verona, and it still makes for a grand entrance to the historic centre. Here you’ll be close to many of the best things to see in Verona as well as the city’s main train station Verona Porta Nuova.
  • San Zeno is an atmospheric neighbourhood surrounding the Basilica of San Zeno where, according to legend, Romeo and Juliet were wed. You can get a taste of traditional Verona – and a taste of the almond-stuffed pastries in the pasticcerias.
  • Borgo Trento is just across the river from the historic centre. ‘Borgo’ means ‘village’ in Italian and that’s exactly the vibe here: it’s a family-friendly area boasting leafy parks and serene spots. This neighbourhood offers a residential feel while still having easy access to Verona attractions.
  • Veronetta, also across the river from Citta Antica, is popular with young locals who love the neighbourhood’s street food and nightlife. Here you can see a different side of Verona, literally – this is also where you’ll find amazing viewpoints at Giardino Giusti and Castel San Pietro.

Three days in Verona is enough time to see top sights like Juliet’s balcony and the Verona Arena without rushing. On a three-day trip you’ll also have time to be flexible and make the most of evening activities like attending a ballet or opera performance. If you stay for a week or longer, you’ll also be able to fit a trip to Lake Garda into your itinerary.
