Start the day with coffee at a Rome cafe bar on Piazza Sant'Eustachio square. Complement your sightseeing with platefuls of pasta in Ghetto restaurants or al fresco lunches near Rome's ancient Pantheon. In the evening find a traditional trattoria restaurant in Rome's Trastevere for spaghetti with mussels, then linger to people-watch and sip Negroni cocktails into the evening.
At lunchtime, find a table at outdoor restaurants lining Piazza Navona square or buy takeaway pizza by the slice from a laneway bakery in Rome's Centro Storico (historic centre). Head to San Lorenzo to seek out cheap restaurants near Rome's university or the Ghetto for fried artichokes and other traditional Rome restaurant fare. In the evening, cross the River Tiber to Trastevere and dine with locals in an authentic Roman restaurant serving Rome's signature dish, spaghetti with pecorino cheese and pepper.
You'll find that many of Rome's restaurants close on Sunday or Monday, and the best place to find late-night food is open-air piazzas in Rome's Centro Storico. If your bill ends up being larger than you thought, it's because of the additional bread and cover charge. You can save breakfast or snack-time euros by standing at the counter of a Rome bar to down your coffee and sandwich – it's cheaper than sitting down.
If Piazza Navona square is Rome's cafe central, Campo de'Fiori's pretty market square is Rome's night-time bar magnet. Fire up at bars on Rome's best espresso on nearby Piazza Sant'Eustachio or gelato ice cream and Campari at elegant cafe bars on Rome's Piazza del Popolo square. You'll find tucked-away backstreet pubs in Trastevere and dark wood-panelled Rome wine bars serving sparkling prosecco wine and cocktails in the alleyways surrounding Piazza Navona.
