Head to Muscat's higher-end hotels for bars that sell alcohol. Hotel restaurants
in Muscat also offer the most varied range of cuisines, including Western and Indian
food. Local Muscat specialities are charcoal-grilled meats, fresh seafood and kingfish
with lemon rice. Try traditional Omani cooking – fragrant with herbs and
spices, but not too hot. Wash down with coffee scented with cardamom.
Muscat restaurant districts
Muscat's larger international hotels offer several different choices of
restaurants and bars. Enjoy fragrant curries at a poolside restaurant, or tasty
lobster looking out across the Gulf of Oman. For the real flavour of Muscat,
munch on still-warm flat bread from stands in the Old Town. Then refresh
yourself with an exotic concoction at a Muscat juice bar overlooking the
Corniche.
Muscat restaurant tips
For a quick, tasty lunch, you don't need a restaurant or bar. The
shwarma grilled meat-filled pitta bread sandwich is Muscat's
street-food staple. Alcohol is served at licensed restaurants and bars, mostly in
Muscat's hotels. After your meal, act like a Muscat native and nibble
succulent Omani dates as you drink a cup of khawa, strong cardamom-flavoured
coffee.
Muscat bars
You'll find pubs, bars and nightclubs at Muscat's larger
international hotels. Find a bar to suit your mood whether it's relaxing to
piano music in a lounge bar or watching international sport on a big screen. Sip a
cocktail at one of Muscat's beach bars, or try a hubble-bubble water pipe
and mint tea at a traditional coffee house.
