Malaga

View of the port at Malaga.
Overview

Make the most of Malaga's sandy Mediterranean beaches, sea-view golf resorts and all-night bars. Come back to Malaga's bougainvillea-scented Old Town and learn more about its Moorish heritage at the Alcazaba citadel. Browse the prized collection of paintings at the Picasso Museum or the innovative international exhibitions at the Contemporary Arts Centre.

Background

The Moorish Gibralfaro and Alcazaba citadels loom over the Old Town, Malaga's social and cultural hub. Lose yourself in its tangle of winding streets, home to the Picasso Museum, housed in a 15th-century Andalusian mansion. Take time to explore the Baroque-Renaissance Cathedral and pause for refreshment at one of the bars here. From the main Plaza Constitución square, marble-paved shopping haven Calle Larios leads south down towards Malaga's working port. Head west along bustling tree-lined Alameda Principal to El Corte Inglés department store. Walk east of the Old Town to see the Malagueta neighbourhood's beaches, and the seafront promenades of the Pedregalejo and El Palo areas.

First-time visit

After sunbathing on Malagueta's sandy beaches, eat grilled or fried fresh fish in Pedregalejo's seafront restaurants. Climb Gibralfaro hill to glimpse Africa across the sparkling Mediterranean Sea on a clear day. Spend afternoons in the Old Town's warren of alleyways, where you'll find the Picasso Museum, an art gallery dedicated to Malaga's most famous son. You'll also see La Manquita (one-armed woman), as the locals call their intriguing 15th to 17th-century Cathedral, due to its missing tower. Join the jet-set in Marbella's Golf Valley and glamorous Puerto Banus marina.

Return visit

Watch flamenco dancers at the restored 19th-century Cervantes Theatre and look up to the allegorical painting of Malaga on its ceiling. Escape the crowds on sheltered Playa Guadalhorce beach, then cool off with mint tea in a Moorish tetería tearoom in the Larios backstreets. Head to the bazaar-like Ataranzas Market for giant lobsters and fresh fruit, or take a picnic to La Concepción tropical botanical gardens to breathe in the scents of Chinese orange blossom trees.
