Background
Sitting on a 4265-foot-high plateau in southern Zambia, capital Lusaka oozes African
appeal. You'll find the city centre spreading west from Cairo
Road, taking in New City Market, the bustling, open-air Kamwala Market and the Zintu
Community Museum. Head east to get a closer look at the government area,
including the State House. Then continue further east for the Henry Tayali Visual
Arts Gallery at the Showgrounds and the Mpala Gallery, both showcasing the work of
local artists. The north-eastern suburb of Northmead is where you'll
find the city's nightlife scene.
First-time visit
Visit Lusaka National Museum to trace the development of the capital through
enticing tales of witchcraft and exhibitions by contemporary artists. Then explore
Munda Wanga Environmental Park to see African wildlife, cared for here
before being released back into the wild. Take a stroll past the brightly-coloured
flowers in the Botanical Gardens, an oasis of calm in the centre of bustling
Lusaka. Or step inside the Cathedral of the Holy Cross to cool off and see
its tall stained glass windows. At wildlife ranch Lilayi Lodge, take a game
drive to get close to zebra and antelopes.
Return visit
If you didn't get enough safari the first time round, make a return visit to
take a one-hour drive to game park Chaminuka, where you might spot elephants,
giraffes and lions. Back in Lusaka, visit the Henry Tayali Visual Arts
Gallery to see exhibitions by local artists. You can also buy African art here
to take home as a souvenir. If this gets you in the mood for shopping, head for
Kabwata Cultural Village. Here you can browse stalls looking for African
antiques, books and hand-carved wooden statues. Spend a night out in the bars and
nightclubs of Northmead to hear lively African rhythms long into the
night.
