Come to this upbeat colonial city to see the thunderous Victoria Falls and the
mighty Zambezi River. Visit colourful, bustling Maramba Market, and learn
about Zambia's history at the Livingstone Museum. Be adventurous and
build up for white-water rafting, bungee jumping or abseiling with a bowl of
nshima (maize meal porridge). Then round off your perfect day with a well-earned
cold Rhino beer.
Background
Formerly known as Constitutional Hill – which was founded in 1905 as capital of
Northern Rhodesia – Livingstone was renamed in 1964 when Zambia won its
independence. Just five miles from Victoria Falls, and named after famed
explorer David Livingstone, this is one of Africa's great adventure
destinations. Choose from a whole host of white-knuckle activities – or
try them all. You can slow the pace down with a riverboat ride on the Zambezi
River, or with a round of golf. Then shop for souvenirs on lively
Mosi-oa-Tunya Road.
First-time visit
See Victoria Falls from above in a helicopter or microlight. Make a splash as
you go white-water rafting on the roaring Zambezi River, or bungee jump from
the Victoria Falls Bridge. Go on safari in search of wildlife, maybe even on the
back of an elephant. Buzzing Maramba Market sells exotic fruits, while the
Mosi-oa-Tunya Road stalls sell souvenirs. Don't forget to
haggle. Be enthralled by the impressive collection (including many of Dr
Livingstone's possessions) at the Livingstone Museum. At sunset,
watch hippos and crocodiles on a river cruise before you go dancing in a downtown
nightclub after dark.
Return visit
If you're a train fan, get steamed up at the Railway Museum at
Chishimba Falls. Leya tribal life is on show at Mukuni village.
Try to hook a tiger – the powerful tiger fish is one of Africa's
top freshwater game catches. Enjoy the African bush and Zambezi riverbank
scenery on horseback. You can cool off with a swim in the Devil's
Pool, a small lagoon on the very lip of Victoria Falls, from August to
early December. Take a trip over the border to Botswana's Chobe National
Park, renowned for its abundant wild game.
