Las Vegas was the first place to legalize the casino style of gambling we are familiar with today. The Strip first boomed in 1940 and 1990 saw downtown Las Vegas exploding again. The boulevard continues to thrive with new themed hotels and casinos opening regularly.

A desert oasis, Las Vegas is a haven for sun-seeking travellers at any time of year. But if you want to enjoy the buzz of the city's high season, book your flights for spring or autumn, October in particular. On the other hand, if you're hoping to avoid the biggest crowds, plan summer or winter holidays.

There are plenty of ways to get around Las Vegas. From the monorail to the strip's Deuce bus, you won't be short of ways to travel. You'll also find a free tram between some of the larger hotels, as well as the ACE Gold line from downtown to the strip. Choose a rental car to explore at your own pace.

Tipping is important in Las Vegas, and many bellhops, baggage staff and concierges will expect a small gratuity for their service. But you don’t have to tip wildly,, $1 or $2 dollars is often plenty. In a restaurant or for room service, consider tipping 15 to 20 per cent of the bill instead.

Las Vegas is a hot holiday spot for more reasons than one. It’s not just the excellent tourist attractions that draw visitors – it’s also the famous Las Vegas sunshine. The summer can be extremely hot, so be prepared if you’re travelling over June, July and August.
