Background
Helsinki's main thoroughfares radiate from the central Erottaja square. You'll find major cultural attractions nearby, including the National Museum, a showcase of Finnish history, the Ateneum's 18th to 20th-century art and Kiasma's contemporary gallery. It's also the focal point of Helsinki's nightlife. Stroll east along broad, airy Esplanadi, with its parks and smart shops, to the bustling harbourside with lively market. Further on is Engels' 19th-century Neoclassical Senate Square, home to gleaming white Helsinki Cathedral. Follow the long Mannerheimintie street north to the Taka-Töölö district, for the Finlandia concert hall, Musiikkitalo music centre and the Sibelius Monument, a homage to the Romantic Finnish composer.
First-time visit
Get your bearings with the Spårakoff bar tram tour; the 40-minute trip includes a beer onboard. Take a pleasant walk past the Finlandia Hall concert venue on Töölönlahti lake's shore to Taka-Töölö and Sibelius Park to see the remarkable monument to Finland's greatest composer. Stroll to Senate Square to admire iconic white Helsinki Cathedral, then walk a short way east for the onion-domed Uspenski Russian Orthodox Cathedral. Later, head for the Erottaja square area for the best of Helsinki's clubs and bars, and Finnish and international restaurants.
Return visit
In summer, take the 15-minute boat trip to Suomenlinna Island, with its 18th-century sea fortress and gourmet restaurants, or enjoy a leisurely cruise through the islands of the archipelago. Year round, browse the cutting-edge shops of the Design District Helsinki and the central Kamppi district, or explore the many departments of the Stockmann store. Take in a classical concert at Finlandia Hall, the Musiikkitalo centre or the Opera House. Or if art and history is your thing, spend time at the imposing National Museum, home to a vast collection of coins and weapons, and the Ateneum art gallery with classical and modern art.
