If you spend much time on South Beach during your Miami holiday, you’d be forgiven for thinking the area’s official sport is sunbathing, but Miami has lots to offer the more active holidaymaker too. There’s golf, tennis and watersports or if you’re more into spectator sports you can always head for a Miami Dolphins American football game.
Florida is home to more golf courses than any other destination in the world and whatever level your game is at, Miami offers a rich variety of courses to practice your swing. If you fancy adding a little variety to your golf holiday in Miami, then you’ll find a host of other sports to get involved in on your Miami holiday. Why not try beach volleyball, diving, fishing or cycling for starters? There are plenty of cycle tracks along the beach – you could even try your hand at roller-blading.
The waters around Miami are full of promise when it comes to scuba diving and snorkelling and thanks to the Gulf Stream currents, you can generally enjoy good visibility. There is a lot to discover – from abundant marine life to natural and artificial reefs. There are also over 70 wrecks in Biscayne Bay waiting to be explored. And if you want a snorkel adventure, there are miles of shallow reef to keep you happy.
Hire a boat and sail across the crystal clear waters of Biscayne Bay. Cruise along the coastline, and get a new perspective on the beautiful pastel-coloured ocean-front buildings of South Beach. Or charter a boat with a local guide and go fishing - the Atlantic waters are rich in snapper and grouper or you can head out further afield to experience the thrill of deep sea fishing for shark, marlin and sailfish.
If a golf holiday in Miami isn’t what you’re after, why not try tennis? Miami is mad about tennis and with over 250 courts in the city, there’s plenty of opportunity to catch a game or two. The Diplomat Country Club and The Ritz-Carlton, Key Biscayne both have big tennis centres, and Miami plays host to the ATP Tournament in March 2008.
