Gritty but cultured, Glasgow is chock-full of galleries, museums and graceful parks. See the city's Art Nouveau heritage while admiring Charles Rennie Mackintosh–designed buildings, or shop in style at city-centre designer boutiques.
The River Clyde runs through Glasgow, dividing it into north and south. In the city centre, you can easily get everywhere on foot. Head to central Merchant City for the best choice of restaurants and bars, and the Neoclassical Gallery of Modern Art. Find the shopping hub along pedestrianised Buchanan Street and pass more bars and shops along Sauchiehall Street towards the West End. Here, you'll find graceful tenement buildings, once mighty family houses and now apartments. Nearby, you'll find the peaceful Botanic Gardens and Hunterian Museum's eclectic collection, from Old Master paintings to Maori knives. Football-mad Glasgow is divided into Rangers' Ibrox Stadium in the south, and Celtic Park in the north-east.
On your first visit, explore the West End, with 19th-century tenement houses lining the peaceful residential area. Stroll around the Botanic Gardens brimming with tropical plants and glass houses. Follow the River Clyde to the silver-crescent Glasgow Science Centre, home to a planetarium and many fascinating hands-on exhibits. Just east of the city centre, enter Gothic Glasgow Cathedral, the city's oldest building, to see its modern stained-glass windows and the tomb of St Mungo, Glasgow's patron saint.
South of the city, wander through peaceful Pollok Country Park and see paintings and antique tapestries in the Burrell Collection, with a huge glass wall overlooking woodland. Modelled on Paris's Père-Lachaise Cemetery, the Necropolis is a memorial to Glasgow's wealthy merchants, with sculptors and masons making it a superb resting place. Although boasting lots of international restaurants, Glasgow is a good place to try Scotland's favourite offal dish, haggis, or local clams and oysters.
Scotland's busiest airport, Glasgow Airport flies almost nine million passengers a year to over 90 destinations from its single terminal. The airport is 8 miles (13 km) west of central Glasgow, a 25-minute trip by bus.
