British Airways has regular flights to Venice Marco Polo Airport on the mainland,
just under eight miles north of Venice. Not long after Venice flights land
you'll be gazing up at the spires and domes of Venice's Byzantine
St Mark's Basilica. Stretch your legs after flights with a stroll
around Venice's arcaded S Mark's Square; then follow the maze
of tiny alleyways leading to Venice's palace-lined Grand Canal.
Travel to/from central Venice
Take a boat after Venice flights land to really appreciate its beauty. You can
catch a quick motor ferry after your Venice flight and be at St
Mark's Square in an hour. Or take the longer, more scenic ferry
route to Venice via Murano island, the Venice Lido and the
Arsenale, site of Venice's medieval shipyard. Public buses
travel to the Piazzale Roma transport hub near Venice's Santa Lucia
train station in around 20 minutes. Water taxis take you wherever you want to
go after your Venice flights land.
Best of Venice
Once you've finished taking holiday snaps of Venice's majestic
St Mark's Basilica after your flight to Venice, lose yourself in
Venice's winding alleyways and canalside pathways. Glide down the canals on
a romantic gondola ride then dine on local fish risotto at a restaurant overlooking
the Grand Canal. You'll soon discover that the real Venice lies off
the beaten track. When you catch return flights from Venice take care packing
fragile papier-mâché Carnevale masks, miniature gondola
models and rainbow-coloured millefiori mosaic-like glass jewellery from
Venice's Murano island.
