British Airways flights to Madrid land at Madrid-Barajas Airport, eight miles north-east of central Madrid. Hop on Madrid's Metro after your flight and you'll soon be enjoying a drink in a buzzing Madrid bar or pavement cafe. Head to elegant Retiro Park to unwind after your flight or explore Madrid's medieval streets and world-famous art collections.
When your flight lands at Madrid Airport, look out for Metro signs. Line eight takes you to Madrid's Nuevos Ministerios station in about 15 minutes, then it's another 15 minutes by Metro into central Madrid. You can also take a bus after your Madrid flights, which travel to Avenida de América Metro station. Hail a metered taxi from outside Flight Arrivals. The journey can take anything from 20 minutes to an hour into Madrid city centre. If you're travelling with a small group on your flight to Madrid, book a private AeroCity shuttle bus, which can work out cheaper.
Even if your Madrid flight gets in late, you'll find plenty of bars serving drinks and tapas snacks to Madrid's all-night crowd. Before or after early-morning flights to Madrid, try the traditional breakfast treat of churros long doughnuts dipped in hot chocolate on Madrid's Plaza Oriente square. Wander central Madrid on foot, from the Atocha district's tropical Royal Botanic Garden to the Malasaña area's Dos de Mayo square, site of Madrid's anti-Napoleonic insurrection. Before your flight home from Madrid, head to Calle Piamonte street to buy hand-painted leather bags or souvenirs Spanish flag key rings and posters on Plaza Mayor.
