Originally known as ‘Beal Feirste', Belfast is famous for its boatbuilding and thriving waterfront industry, with Harland and Wolff gaining notoriety for the ill-fated Titanic. Have a drink in McHugh's in Queen's Square; the pub is the oldest building in Belfast, dating back to 1711. Then check out some of the wonderful architecture such as the Edwardian City Hall and the older buildings of the Cathedral Quarter, which are sat side by side beautifully with the contemporary lines of the modern Waterfront Hall.

The National Trust-owned Crown Liquor Saloon is a wonder; its ornate restaurant interior is adorned with panels from the Titanic's sister ship, the Britannic. You'll find it difficult to miss the imposing giant cranes, affectionately known as Samson and Goliath, which dominate the Belfast skyline.
