You will land in Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD), which is 15 miles from the centre of the city. A taxi will cost you 12 AZN (around £10) or catch the N16 bus, costing just 1 AZN (80p) but it will take much longer.

Spend the day exploring the Old Town; marvel at the architecture and follow the haphazard streets to find a treasure at every turn. Climb the symbolic Maiden Tower, said to date from the 12th century, for wonderful views of the city. Also, the Palace of the Shirvan Shahs, the medieval palace of the Shirvan Shahs, should definitely be on your to-do list.
