Flights to Athens

British Airways offers regular flights to Athens, which land at Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos, 17 miles north-east of Athens city centre. Opened in 2001, you can see the benefits of the Athens facelift for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. Once your flight lands, catch a train, bus or taxi to the heart of Athens, dominated by the ancient hilltop Acropolis, or to waterside Piraeus, Athens' port and gateway to the Greek islands.

Travel to/from central Athens

After your flight to Athens Airport, the efficient public transport system will take you to Central Athens in around 40 minutes. When your Athens flight has landed, hop on a train to Larissis Station and the Port of Pireaus, which connects to the rest of Athens by Metro. Or take the less frequent Athens Metro from the airport to the city centre. Choose the 24-hour express bus services for slightly cheaper services to Syntagma Square in Athens city centre, Athens' Port of Piraeus, or Kifissia, Athens' smart northern suburb. For a fast and direct trip to your hotel after your flight, take a yellow Athens taxi from the rank outside Flight Arrivals.

After your flight lands in Athens, you'll enter one of Europe's hottest and most vibrant cities. Considered the birthplace of Western civilisation, Athens' most visited site is the world-renowned hilltop Acropolis. See Athens antiques market in Monastiraki and the fruit and vegetable stalls of Athens Central Market near Omonia. Party in the refurbished warehouses of Athens' hippest nightlife district, Gazi, or sip cocktails on the beach in Vouliagmeni on the Athens coast. Before leaving Athens for your flight home, buy handmade leather sandals, beachwear and potent aniseed-flavoured ouzo spirit and pack them carefully in your flight bag.
