Travelling into Amritsar
One of the more modern airports in India, Sri Guru Ram Das Ji International (ATQ) is a 20 minute drive from the city centre. Expect to pay around £1.50 for a taxi. Or, if you’d rather tour the city a little off the beaten track, hiring an autorickshaw costs just Rs 50 (70p) per hour.
Things to do in Amritsar
Amritsar is a colourful city located in the state of Punjab, in the north-western part of India. Founded in 1577 by the fourth guru Ram Das, it is home to the Sikh shrine Harmandir Sahib, also known as the Golden Temple.
A stone’s throw from the busy streets of Punjab, this tranquil sanctuary attracts more visitors per year than the Taj Mahal. Meaning ‘the Holy pool of nectar’, its gold-plated complex glitters opulently in the middle of a large lake, where pilgrims can bathe.
Be sure to pick up souvenirs at the Hall Bazaar, an enchanting palette of bold colour and fragrances. Peppered with a myriad of stalls offering Punjabi 'juttis’ (shoes) and aromatic spices, meandering through the Bazaar makes for an exciting snapshot opportunity. Afterwards, cool off in one of the ‘dhabas’ (traditional cafes) with a refreshing Lassi while you peruse your trinkets.
