Travelling into Amman
Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) is about 10 miles south of Amman. Taxis operate 24 hours a day and prices are fixed at JD35 for the 30 minute journey (the currency is Jordan Dinar, which converts to around £32). Express buses run every 30 minutes and take you to Abdali (midtown Amman).
Places to see in Amman
The downtown area of the city is where you'll find the more traditional and historical sites like the ancient Roman amphitheatre, which is believed to date back to 169 - 177 AD.
Citadel Hill is one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited places, and significantly home of the Temple of Hercules. It's a good place to start your tour of this historic capital. Visit the National Archaeological Museum and view the famous Dead Sea Scrolls as well as other wonderful artefacts.
Jordanian cuisine is a joy; the traditional Fatteh (Fattet Makadem - chick peas with fresh lamb and yoghurt on toasted bread) at the ambient Fakhr El Din restaurant is simply divine, go to the well-hidden but funky Jafra where you can make your own Turkish coffee which is definitely an experience, and also be sure to try the Kunaafa at Habeebah, a deliciously sweet delicacy made from cheese, pastry and syrup.
