Doha

Museum of Muslim Arts in Doha.
Overview

You'll see most of what Qatar has to offer in the capital city Doha. From the end of 2008 visit the 53,820 square feet of exhibition space at Doha's brand-new Museum of Islamic Art or haggle for local fabrics at Souk Waqif. Stop for a glass of mint tea and watch the sun set over the sea from the Corniche promenade.

Background

Overlooked by towering skyscrapers, Doha's curved Corniche walkway runs alongside the sparkling blue waters of the Arabian Sea. You'll find attractions like the Moorish Doha Fort and the Qatar National Museum near the centre of the city. Head south for designer shopping in large, air-conditioned malls. Then visit the Mushereib district for Doha's traditional souk markets. Eat out at local restaurants along Al Sadd Street. Or go to Al Rayyan, on the outskirts of town, to see horse racing at Al Shahaniya.

First-time visit

View exhibits at the Museum of Islamic Art, a strikingly modern Lego-like block designed by famous Chinese architect Pei. Take a sunset cruise in a traditional dhow boat around Doha Bay. Or buy designer brands from City Centre Doha, the biggest shopping complex in the Middle East. For more traditional shopping wander Souk Waqif in search of fabric, jewellery and carpets. Relax at the end of the day with a stroll along the Corniche, the seven-mile stretch of coastline looking out across the Arabian Sea.

Return visit

Tee off at Doha Golf Club, an 18-hole championship course designed by Peter Harradine. Or take a boat trip to explore tiny Al-Saflia Island and swim in the warm Arabian Sea. Try local mint tea or join locals for a fruity shisha pipe in a souk market cafe. Dine out on freshly caught seafood at fish restaurants strung along the Corniche.
