Explore Denmark's 400 islands and its mainland, Jutland, to discover its unique mix of sea-faring history, fresh Nordic air and fast-paced cities. Visit cosmopolitan capital Copenhagen to experience Denmark's royal heritage at Amalienborg Palace and its Viking past at the National Museum.

Background

You'll notice a strong German influence in the south of Jutland and Scandanavian flair, and contemporary living in the north and east, around Ålborg and Copenhagen. Escape the city bustle on the wide sandy beaches of Sjælland, or explore the lush forests of Midtjylland. Get to Denmark early to breakfast on pickled herring, then head to Århus to try caraway-flavoured akvavit snaps, a local Scandinavian staple.

Urban

Start in Copenhagen, the capital and heart of modern Denmark, with its proud reputation for tolerance and its cosmopolitan air. Take in its contrasting architecture from the 15th-century buildings of the University of Copenhagen to the contemporary Opera House. Explore Denmark's main port town, Århus, packed with historic landmarks and art museums. Or head further south to Odense, the birthplace of famous fairy-tale author Hans Christian Andersen. Visit his childhood home, now a museum.

Rural

Discover Denmark's 3,000 miles of unspoilt beaches, or go inland to join the cyclists, a popular pastime among the Danes. Head north of the capital to coastal Kronborg Castle, the setting for Shakespeare's Hamlet. Ferries link the many islands, and Denmark's small size means you're never far from services. You'll find that even outside the main cities, the Danes are generally helpful and friendly, and the majority speak at least some English.
