Overview

Visit Dallas to explore America's largest urban arts centre, the Dallas Arts District. Stand on the landmark spot where President Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. Cheer on local basketball and ice hockey teams at Victory Park, or spend your evenings listening to live country and western music.

Background

The Trinity River wraps itself around central Dallas. You'll find most of the city's attractions in the west and south. Head Downtown for modern museums and galleries within the Dallas Arts District. Nearby is the West End Historic District, Dallas' former trading port. North of Dallas you'll find lots of shopping centres, including 1930s Highland Park Village, America's oldest, and Uptown, a popular restaurant and nightlife district. To the east, listen to blues in Deep Ellum or take the kids to Dallas' family attractions in Fair Park.

First-time visit

Arrive early to see the concrete block John F Kennedy Memorial, which marks the spot where President Kennedy was shot dead in front of crowds of onlookers. The nearby Sixth Floor Museum will tell you all about the event, the most important in Dallas' history. Then view 20th-century art at the Nasher Sculpture Center, the centrepiece of the Dallas Arts District. Join sports-crazed locals at Victory Park for a basketball or ice hockey game. Or find a cowboy hat for a night of live country and western music at the landmark honky-tonk bar Gilley's Dallas.

Return visit

Spend some time browsing the Art Deco neighbourhood of Fair Park, a favourite family spot home to the Dallas World Aquarium and the Museum of Nature and Science. You'll discover one of North America's finest Spanish art collections at the Southern Methodist University's Meadows Museum. In the evening, chill out with a cold beer in bohemian Deep Ellum for a young, off-beat vibe and soulful blues clubs.
