Climate change - One Destination Carbon Fund

In September 2011 we launched the new One Destination Carbon Fund.

The new scheme is unique to BA and for the first time will enable you to support low carbon community projects across the UK. Examples may be solar hot water schemes in public swimming pools, small scale wind turbines for schools, or energy efficiency measures in social housing.

Whatever the project we will ensure your money goes to make a very real difference in communities across the UK – better still each project you help support saves carbon so its good for the environment as well as local communities too.

Climate change and the One Destination Carbon Fund

We know that climate change is the biggest long term challenge the world faces, and we are determined to play our part in reducing our environmental impact. We have developed our Corporate Responsibility strategy, called One Destination, to ensure we are the most efficient and responsible airline in operation.

One of the main causes of climate change is an excess of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. It can come from deforestation, electricity production, shipping, as well as flying which accounts for 2 per cent of man made CO2 emissions.

We are therefore very keen to ensure you can help and be part of our mission to reduce our impact on the environment by donating to the One Destination Carbon Fund.

Example projects

Fenham Swimming Pool - Newcastle

Fenham Pool, in Newcastle upon Tyne, has been an important community facility catering for groups of all ages and abilities since 1938.  The pool, operated by Newcastle City Council, was closed in 2003, despite opposition from residents.

Since the closure local people formed a committee and registered themselves as a company and charity with the sole aim of reopening the pool. Surveys were carried out and showed a massive demand from the whole community as well as local schools, residents and health providers.

It reopened in July 2005 as a Community Run Pool.

With help from the One Destination Community Fund the pool has installed a solar hot water system. Through using renewable solar energy to heat the water the pool has both reduced its energy costs and cut its carbon emissions

Ospreys Leisure Centre - Weymouth

This is located on the UK South Coast and is one of the first projects to benefit from the One Destination Carbon Fund.

In May 2007 the charitable, not-for-profit organisation took over a former Naval sports centre with the intention of providing recreation and sports facilities for their local community.

Much remedial and refurbishment work was required to upgrade the site for public use. Since opening annual attendances have trebled, as too has essential expenditure, particularly with regards to electricity and gas costs.

The Trust has already invested £130,000 in energy saving measures but to keep ahead of increasing energy prices they are seeking to install renewable energy.

This is where your donations have been focused.  The One Destination Carbon Fund is helping the Osprey Leisure Centre install a 10kW solar photovoltaic system that will go towards reducing the amount of energy, and therefore cost, currently used to heat and operate the pool.
